A modernized Ukrainian MiG-29MU1 fighter jet destroyed a road bridge near Pokrovsk that Russian forces were using for logistics and as shelter for assault units, delivering the strike with high-precision guided bombs.
The Soniashnyk Telegram channel released video of the airstrike.
According to the footage, the attack was carried out using two French-made AASM (HAMMER) bombs.
This was not the first strike on this position; however, this time a successful hit by the Ukrainian pilot completely destroyed the bridge.
The Ukrainian modernization of the MiG-29 to the MU1 standard includes, among other things, the replacement of several components of the N019 radar, which increased the detection range of aerial targets by 30%, the installation of the SN-3307-01 satellite navigation system, modernization of the radio system, and a number of other upgrades.
The work also includes a major overhaul of the aircraft and its components based on their technical condition. This allowed extending the aircraft’s service life by an additional 700 flight hours.
The average repair time for one fighter aircraft was 9 months. During this period, the aircraft is completely disassembled, its airframe, engine, systems, and equipment are inspected for defects, repaired, and then reassembled.
As of 2021, the cost of modernizing one MiG-29 fighter jet to the MU1 standard was about UAH 100 million – approximately $3.6 million at the exchange rate at the time. Overall, Ukrainian industry was capable of upgrading up to 10 aircraft per year in this way.
