The Ukrainian Air Force has begun using F-16 fighter jets to strike Russian ground targets.
The Air Force released its first interview with a Ukrainian F-16 pilot, who spoke about combat missions, tactics, and a powerful team that has successfully mastered Western technology and new approaches to its use.
“Pilots flying Western fighter jets demonstrate excellent results against both air and ground targets,” the Air Force stated.
For ground strikes, Ukrainian F-16s are equipped with high-precision aerial bombs, including SDBs and JDAM-ER glide bombs.
A recently published high-quality image of a Ukrainian F-16 shows BRU-61 pylons carrying four GBU-39/B SDBs per pylon.
This American lightweight, high-precision guided bomb weighs 130 kg, with a diameter of 190 mm and a length of 1.8 meters. When dropped from high altitude, it has a maximum range of up to 110 km.
“If we want, our bomb can fly into someone’s window,” the F-16 pilot said.
For maximum strike efficiency, Ukrainian pilots must approach enemy positions, which increases the risk of enemy missile launches from both aircraft and ground-based air defense systems.
To counter aerial threats, Ukrainian F-16s are also armed with AIM-120C, AIM-9M, and AIM-9X air-to-air missiles.
The AIM-120 AMRAAM is a medium-range supersonic missile that forms the backbone of Western air superiority capabilities.
The Air Force of Ukraine has recently received another batch of F-16 multirole fighters as part of international military assistance.
