Ukrainian experts dismantled and studied the Russian tank electronic warfare (EW) system.
The device for the study was received by the Ukrainian military and radio communication expert Serhii Beskrestnov with the call sign ‘Flash.’
The tank with this system was captured by soldiers of the Azov Brigade in the Donetsk region during the battle near the village of Terny.
After the end of the battle, the Azov soldiers pulled the damaged Russian T-72B3 tank from the battlefield.
The Russians equipped it with a combination of several EW systems at once. In such a way, they tried to protect the tank from Ukrainian FPV drones.
All EW systems were fastened to the top of the turret with a rope and powered by a gasoline generator.
This combination of systems simultaneously created obstacles in virtually all popular FPV operating ranges.
However, Ukrainian pilots managed to strike this tank by using a drone with a delivery system.
According to the expert, the basic EW system consists of six antennas and six modules: two antennas 800 MHz, 900 MHz and 2.4 hHz, two modules per 50 W. The used antennas of the patch type are directed with a diagram of 60-70°.
“Therefore, there were three of them on the tank in all directions,” ‘Flash’ noted.
EW modules without active cooling were used, so the design had radiators. The origin of the interference modules is Chinese, they were powered by a 28 V source.
Serhii Beskrestnov assessed the capabilities of the entire set of established EW tools.
According to him, they are capable of suppressing the Mavic drone radio channel 500-800 meters, and the FPV-type kamikaze drones with ExpressLRS (open source radio control channel) 50-150 meters from the tank.
Since the Russian soldiers expected the drones to be in different ranges, they added more frequencies to the basic device. This was done due to patch antennas and Chinese modules: tin antennas with laser cutting at a minimum cost.
The optional device operates in the 700 MHz and 5.8 GHz bands and is shaped like a cube.
Although Beskrestnov made some comments on the device, he didn’t mention all of its features, and also made no public comments on its disadvantages. However, the military will receive full information.
“I will not publicly voice my opinion and some nuances about this product. Because I do not want to give the enemy hints for its improvement. All its vulnerabilities will be reported by closed channels,” the military explained.
Recall that recently, MP Petro Poroshenko presented the Ai-Petri SV electronic warfare system and handed over the party to the Ukrainian military.
