The Armed Forces of Ukraine use 155-mm Caesar wheeled self-propelled howitzers against Russian troops.
Radio Svoboda reported about this.
Ukrainian artillerymen showed journalists the control system of the Caesar ACS provided by France as military-technical assistance. The self-propelled howitzers hit targets in the rear of Russian troops in the Donbas.
One of the ACS’ main advantages is a digital fire control system that allows it to fire almost immediately after assuming position.
Artilleryman Hlib said that the task of the crew is simply to put in the coordinates. “I can do it even while advancing to the position, and the system will calculate all the necessary data to hit the target.”
The serviceman also added that when calculation is completed, the system selects the right ammunition.
Caesar self-propelled howitzer can perform a combat mission in 3-5 minutes. This time includes assuming the firing position and opening fire.
This allows Ukrainian artillerymen to work constantly changing position, using “maneuver-fire-maneuver” tactics.
This howitzer is capable of firing at a maximum range of 38 km with conventional ammunition.
It is the longest range of fire among 155-mm artillery systems received by the Ukrainian army from Western partners.
The CAESAR is a French 155-mm wheeled self-propelled howitzer developed by the GIAT Industries. Its serial production was launched in 2007. 72 units of it were delivered to the French army. The barrel length is 52 calibers. It is carrying 18 rounds of ammunition. The rate of fire is 6 shots per minute.
Caesar is able to use the full range of NATO 155-mm artillery shells. The French army uses Renault Sherpa 5 6×6 for the ACS chassis.
