Ukraine and the United Kingdom have announced the launch of a joint project, under which Ukraine will receive 5,000 Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMM) and the technology for their production.
The Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Rustem Umerov, stated this.
The project is being implemented with the support of Thales and is funded by a loan guaranteed by the British state agency UK Export Finance (UKEF).
In addition to arms supplies, the intergovernmental agreement provides for localization of production and technology transfer.
The project is scheduled to be implemented by 2030.
The British Ministry of Defense detailed that the announced 5,000 missiles will be produced in the UK.
The LMM is a multipurpose lightweight air-to-air and air-to-ground missile developed by the British company Thales.
It is designed to engage air targets and, if necessary, armored vehicles.
The missile is 1.3 meters long, 76 mm in diameter, and weighs up to 13 kg. It features a modular warhead with a shaped charge and pre-fragmented blast capability.
It has a velocity of more than Mach 1.5 and an operational range between 6 km and 8 km, while the minimum range is 400 m.
The modular design allows the LMM to be adapted to different combat missions and different platforms, even for drones.
It can be launched from helicopters, light armored vehicles, ships, and ground launchers.
The missile is used in the Marlet and Stormer man-portable air defense missile systems, which have been in service with the Ukrainian Defense Forces for several years.
