Russia has 3 to 4 medium-range ballistic missiles from the Oreshnik system in its arsenal.
Oleh Luhovskyi, First Deputy Head of Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service, stated this in an interview with Ukrinform.
He also mentioned that in 2026, Russia plans to begin serial production of these missiles and produce at least five units annually.
“We know that the Russian Ministry of Defense plans to begin serial production of the Oreshnik system in 2026 and aims to be able to produce five or more such missiles per year,” Luhovskyi stated.
He also emphasized that the system has more political than military significance. According to him, it is primarily a tool for intimidating European partners, as the system’s combat effectiveness is questionable.
It is worth noting that the Oreshnik missile used to strike the Lviv region lacked a warhead guidance system.
Meanwhile, the missile’s combat stage likely used a sealed instrument compartment, typical of designs from the Moscow Institute of Heat Engineering, as well as a gas-reactive orientation system for the combat stage, which is employed during the warhead separation.
