Operators from the 14th Unmanned Systems Forces (USF) Regiment helped coordinate a HIMARS strike on a Russian BM-27 Uragan multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) in Ukraine.
A video of the strike was published on the USF official Telegram page.
The regiment’s operators identified an enemy launcher positioned to fire on Ukrainian Defense Forces units.
After detecting and confirming the target, they relayed the coordinates to artillery units for a precision strike.
According to the USF press service, Russian forces detected a reconnaissance drone, making it necessary to act quickly.
To destroy the system, the defenders launched a GMLRS missile from HIMARS.
The missile struck the target, triggering an uncontrolled launch of a rocket from the damaged launcher.
The Uragan MLRS remains widely used by the Russian army, though it is also among the most frequently lost systems.
According to the Oryx project, 91 units have been destroyed or abandoned—one of the highest MLRS losses for Russian forces, second only to the Grad systems.
In addition to MLRS, HIMARS systems are also actively hunting for Russian equipment in the rear, in particular radar stations.
In addition to targeting MLRS, HIMARS systems have been used against Russian radar stations in rear positions.
In early March 2025, aerial reconnaissance from Ukraine’s 43rd Artillery Brigade identified a Russian Kasta radar system near the front line. A HIMARS strike successfully damaged the radar. This radar’s critical components that are easily damaged are its antenna, electronics, and equipment inside the vehicles that are part of a system.
It is worth noting that the Russian military considers the concept of a 220-mm multiple launch rocket system promising and continues to develop this direction by manufacturing new systems.
At the end of 2024, Russian military sources reported upgrades to the BM-27 Uragan fleet, replacing the outdated Soviet-era ZIL-135LM chassis with the newer BAZ-69092, featuring an armored cab.
The first BM-27 Uragan on the new chassis was reportedly spotted on the battlefield in summer 2024. It was later destroyed by a drone strike from the Fight Club 92 unit of Ukraine’s 92nd Infantry Brigade.
