The mined strip along the Ukrainian border with Russia and Belarus will be increased to two kilometers in width.

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported about this.

On February 24, the Verkhovna Rada voted in favor of the draft law 7475 “On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of Ukraine Regarding the Protection of the State Border.”

The document lays the foundation and improves the state border protection, as well as resolves the issue of land allocation for the construction of engineering facilities along the border line. In addition, the introduced changes determine the place of border guards in the general system of the Defense Forces during martial law.

The law also regulates the involvement of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard and the National Police in the performance of tasks for the protection of the state border.

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine explained that the strip along the Ukrainian-Russian and Ukrainian-Belarusian border will increase to 2 km in width for engineering and barrier structures. Besides, a special border regime is being introduced on this territory.

“This, practically, will be a mined territory along the border line with the aggressor country,” the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine added.

Other areas of the border still have a border strip 30-50 meters wide from the border line on land or from the shore of the Ukrainian part of the border river, lake or other body of water.

The law also defines a set of measures aimed at repelling an invasion or attack on the territory of Ukraine by the armed forces of a foreign state or group of countries.

Those would include ensuring favorable conditions for the deployment of the Defense Forces of Ukraine and their conduct of hostilities. As well as prevention of subversion and intelligence groups, armed formations of foreign states or illegal armed formations crossing the Ukrainian border.

The law will enter into force once it is signed by the president.

Currently, Ukrainian border guards are creating a system of fortifications in the north. The engineering arrangement of the state border takes place not only for effective control over the area, but also for its defense.
