Ukraine is preparing to deploy the world’s first “drone wall”, an air defense system developed by French company Atreyd.
According to Business Insider, the system has already been delivered to Ukraine and is expected to become operational in the coming weeks. It consists of dozens of small drones that form a “flying minefield” in the sky to intercept enemy munitions.
The “drone wall” will be the first combat use of this kind of defense in an active conflict. It will initially be used to protect cities and critical infrastructure from Russian Shahed drones and later to intercept bombs.
The system uses FPV drones equipped with explosive charges that launch from ground platforms after radar detects a threat. In the air, they form a dense curtain that detonates near incoming munitions, destroying them before impact. Artificial intelligence adjusts the structure of the “wall” in real time based on the trajectory of the target.
The system operates without GPS, relying instead on preloaded 3D maps — a key advantage in environments with heavy electronic warfare. A single operator can control up to 100 drones without specialized training, only needing to learn basic launch and emergency procedures.
According to the developer, the system demonstrated 100% effectiveness during testing, though its real test will come in Ukraine.
It is expected to become a permanent part of Ukraine’s defense network, with plans to expand its use to other regions using locally produced drones.
