Ukraine and Sweden have declared their intention to jointly produce CV90 infantry fighting vehicles in Ukraine.
Prime Minister of Sweden Ulf Kristersson and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said this at a joint briefing.
The two leaders met on Saturday, August 19, as part of the Ukrainian President’s visit to Sweden.
In particular, during the briefing, Kristersson said that a statement of intent to produce CV90 in Ukraine had been signed today.
“This is a sign of the common desire of Sweden and Ukraine to strengthen cooperation in the production and training, and maintenance of the CV90,” said the Swedish Prime Minister.
In his turn, Zelensky emphasized that on Saturday, the agreements between the countries regarding the production of CV90 infantry fighting vehicles in Ukraine were detailed: localization of production, repairs, etc.
“This is very important for us, it is an example of how security and production cooperation fully reflects the unity of our values,” the President said.
In June, Militarnyi reported that Ukraine, the Czech Republic and Slovakia signed a declaration of intent to cooperate in the acquisition and operation of Swedish CV90 infantry fighting vehicles. The declaration was signed on the sidelines of the meeting of the Contact Group on Defense of Ukraine in the Rammstein format on June 15 in Brussels.
Ukraine has expressed interest in purchasing up to 1,000 of these infantry fighting vehicles. Also, the Ukrainian servicemen are already using Swedish CV9040C infantry fighting vehicles at the front.
The agreement will support efforts to harmonize the requirements of the armed forces of all three countries and to seek opportunities for cooperation in “pre-production, in-house production, operation, training and maintenance” of Swedish infantry fighting vehicles.
CV90 MkIV is the most modern version of the CV90 IFV family, which began production in the early 90s. This version of the IFV has received a more powerful 1,000-horsepower Scania engine and a new suspension, due to which its load capacity has increased by 2 tons.
The armor protection of the machine allows it to withstand hits of 30mm rounds in the front projection and round firing from 14.5mm machine guns rounds. Also, IFV can be optionally equipped with active protection systems, as well as additional ceramic armor elements.
