The Ukrainian Ministry of Defence has signed a memorandum of understanding with Diehl Defence, the manufacturer of IRIS-T missiles, aiming to enhance the country’s air defense capabilities.
According to Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, the agreement lays the groundwork for major industrial projects and includes a threefold increase in the supply of missiles and air defense systems.
“I am grateful to Diehl Defence for their trust and willingness to cooperate. It is important that the world’s leading defense companies are taking a step toward Ukraine. The free world is on our side, and together we are opening new opportunities to strengthen our defense,” Umerov stated.
Ukraine actively uses IRIS-T SLS and SLM air defense systems to protect cities and critical infrastructure, making the timely replenishment of missiles a key priority.
In mid-February, Germany pledged to deliver around 100 guided missiles for Ukraine’s IRIS-T air defense systems.
Separately, on March 2, Ukraine and the United Kingdom announced a joint project to supply 5,000 LMM (Lightweight Multirole Missiles) and transfer related production technologies.
The initiative, supported by Thales, is financed through a loan guaranteed by the British state agency UK Export Finance (UKEF).
It is set for completion by 2030.
As part of the agreement, the UK will manufacture the missiles, while Ukraine will localize production and implement the acquired technologies.
The British Ministry of Defence has detailed that the announced 5,000 missiles would be produced in the UK.
