Over the weekend, the United States successfully completed an operation in Afghanistan to eliminate the leader of Al-Qaeda.
As a result of the operation, Ayman al-Zawahiri, who, along with Osama bin Laden, led the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001, was neutralized.
U.S. President Joe Biden announced the elimination of the terrorist leader, Radio Svoboda reported.
“Now justice has been delivered, and this terrorist leader is no more,” Biden said in a televised address on August 1.
Ayman al-Zawahiri was one of the most wanted terrorists in the world.
The leader of Al-Qaeda was killed on July 30 during a U.S. drone strike in Kabul. Zawahiri was standing on the balcony of his house when an American drone fired two missiles at him.
According to the White House, other family members were home but were not injured, and only Zawahiri was killed.
U.S. officials claimed that the United States carried out the drone strike in Kabul at 6:18 a.m. local time on July 31.
“Zawahiri continued to pose an active threat to American citizens, US interests, and national security,” the official said. “His death will deal a significant blow to al-Qaeda and reduce the group’s ability to operate.”
The Taliban-led government’s chief spokesman confirmed that a drone strike by the U.S. took place at his residence in Kabul on July 31. He mentioned that the ruling Islamist extremists strongly condemned it as a violation of “international principles” and the Doha agreement.
Zawahiri’s whereabouts have long been a mystery. The rumors of al-Zawahri’s death had appeared several times in recent years, and he was long reported to have been in poor health.
As previously reported, after 20 years of military presence, the USA withdrew its troops from Afghanistan in August 2021. Major General Chris Donahue was the last American soldier to leave Afghanistan.
