Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) carrier strike group departs for its first deployment in the Atlantic Ocean.
The U.S. Department of Defense reported about this.
The first-in-class aircraft carrier embarked on its first deployment to conduct operations and training exercises alongside NATO allies and partners throughout the Atlantic Ocean.
The state-of-the-art warship has already departed from Naval Station Norfolk.
During the deployment, the flagship of the Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group (GRFCSG) will operate in conjunction with air, sea, and land assets from several NATO allies and partner nations.
The deployment involves approximately 9,000 personnel from nine nations, 20 ships and 60 aircraft.
The following countries will participate in the deployment: U.S., Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden.
Innovation and interoperability are the key focal points of the GRFCSG’s deployment, allowing allied and partner nations to strengthen the collective defense of the Atlantic as well as to mature integration for future operations.
USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) is the main aircraft carrier of the project of the same name, which is to replace the Nimitz-type aircraft carriers. The ship is named after the 38th President of the United States, Gerald R. Ford, who served in the Navy during World War II aboard the light aircraft carrier USS Monterey (CVL-26) in the Pacific Theater.
The construction of the aircraft carrier began on August 11, 2005, when Northrop Grumman conducted a symbolic cutting of the 15-ton sheet that became part of the ship’s hull. It was launched on November 9, 2013.
The USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) commissioning ceremony for the largest aircraft carrier in the world (98,500 tons, 337 meters, 90 aircraft) was held on July 22, 2017, and since then it has been acquiring combat capabilities.
In the spring of 2020, the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) completed combat systems testing during exercises in the Atlantic Ocean. In June 2021, the U.S. Navy tests aircraft carrier with ‘full ship shock trial’ explosion.
