The United States, informally and without the official involvement of Copenhagen, sought to persuade Danish partners in Greenland to provide information on military facilities, ports and air bases on the island.
This was reported by the Danish newspaper Berlingske, citing leaked documents from the Danish Ministry of Defence.
The Danish Defence Ministry was immediately informed of the incidents.
According to the report, in 2025 the United States attempted to do this by bypassing the standard channels of Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Defence and military leadership.
Such information is considered strategically important for Washington and could be relevant to planning a potential U.S. intervention on the island.
Berlingske did not provide further details or comment on the case.
It was previously reported that the United States had for a year been establishing contacts with supporters of the independence movement, as well as with politicians and business figures in Greenland.
Recently, a group of European countries — Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom — issued a new joint statement affirming the inviolability of Greenland.
As NATO members, the countries stressed the need to strengthen security in the Arctic. Previously coordinated Danish-led exercises, Arctic Endurance, conducted with allies, were described as serving this purpose and posing no threat to any party.
The countries expressed full solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland. As part of a process launched last week, European states said they were ready for dialogue based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“The threat of tariffs undermines transatlantic relations and risks a dangerous spiral of deterioration. We will continue to speak with one voice and coordinate our response. We are committed to defending our sovereignty,” the statement said.
Denmark and several European countries have begun deploying a demonstration contingent to reinforce the Alliance’s position on the island.
Germany, Sweden, Norway, the United Kingdom and France have sent troops to take part in the mission. Berlin has called for the deployment of a full European brigade.
Poland ruled out participation in such a format, while Estonia said it was ready to join the deployment.
