The United States Coast Guard has announced two contracts for the construction of up to six Arctic Security Cutters (ASC), specialized icebreakers designed to operate in icy waters.
This move is a significant step in enhancing the U.S. presence in the Arctic.
The contracts were awarded to the Finnish company Rauma Marine Constructions Oy and the American Bollinger Shipyards Lockport, L.L.C.
The agreement is the result of international agreements between the U.S. and Finland, as well as investments outlined in the presidential legislative package, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
Under the contracts, up to two ASCs will be built in Finland, with the first one expected to be delivered in 2028.
Meanwhile, up to four icebreakers will be built in the U.S., with the first American vessel expected to be delivered in 2029.
This approach allows for leveraging the experience of Finnish partners while gradually transitioning production to American shipyards.
