The U.S. Army has released the first images of an early prototype of the next-generation M1E3 Abrams tank.

According to The War Zone, the tank was delivered in December 2025.

The prototype marks an early phase of a broader development program focused on creating a lighter, more efficient, and more adaptable main battle tank.

“The Army has completed the construction of the first early M1E3 prototype as a technology demonstrator. The Army program was developed by Roush and incorporates lessons learned from previous risk-reduction efforts,” an Army spokesperson said.

The two released images of the M1E3 currently available provide only a limited view of the prototype.

The M1E3 turret is similar to those used on existing M1 tank variants but may also feature a slightly lower overall profile.

The vehicle is equipped with external sensors mounted across the hull, including the turret, which are likely components of a situational awareness system for the crew.

As for the hull, it differs significantly from existing versions of the U.S. Abrams tank.

The photographs also indicate changes inside the crew compartment: two hatches are visible at the front of the turret, likely intended for crew members. Notably, all current M1 tank versions have only a single front hatch for the driver, while the remaining positions for the three other crew members are located in the turret.

The U.S. Army has previously confirmed that the M1E3 will feature a new hybrid powerplant and transmission, providing significantly better fuel efficiency than the gas-turbine engine used on current Abrams tanks.

In addition, the latest tank will be equipped with an active protection system and an automated loading system, which is expected to reduce crew size.

Testing of the first version of the M1E3 Abrams concept is set to lsunch in the near future. The official presentation of the new combat vehicle is scheduled for the Detroit Auto Show, which will take place in January 2026.
