The Philippine National Police (PNP) has received a batch of 155 MMG556 light machine guns manufactured by the Turkish company Mertsav Defense.
This was part of a large-scale program to modernize the country’s security forces, according to Defence Turk.
The 5.56 mm MMG556 machine gun was designed as a universal platform for combat and tactical missions. Its design resembles the Belgian FN Minimi, which has already shown its effectiveness in many armies around the world.
This weapon was previously considered in the procurement program for the Philippine Marines.
The MMG556 is based on a long-stroke gas piston, has a telescopic stock and Picatinny rails on the body and forend. This makes it easy to install additional equipment such as optics, lights, and laser designators.
The machine gun is available in three barrel lengths: 13″, 13,7″ і 18,3″. It supports both belt and magazine feeding.
The MMG556 uses the NATO standard 5.56×45 mm ammunition. In Turkey, this model is already in service with special police units.
