The President of Serbia has criticized Turkey for selling arms to Kosovo, namely Skydagger kamikaze drones.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic accused Turkey of violating international law and destabilizing the situation in the Western Balkans.
The reason was the supply of Turkish kamikaze drones to Kosovo, Politico reports.
According to the source, on October 8, thousands of Skydagger drones manufactured in Turkey arrived in Kosovo.
The delivery provoked a sharp reaction from Belgrade: the Serbian authorities believe that arming Pristina contradicts UN resolutions.
“I am appalled by Turkey’s behavior and flagrant violation of the UN Charter and UN Security Council Resolution 1244, as well as the continued arming of the Pristina authorities,” Vucic shared on social media.
Vucic also accused Ankara of seeking to undermine stability in the region and hinted at Turkey’s geopolitical ambitions.
He also noted that Turkey is not interested in stability in the Western Balkans and is once again dreaming of expanding its influence.
A 1998 UN Security Council resolution prohibits the sale or supply of arms to Kosovo. However, Resolution 1244, adopted in 1999, provides exceptions for supplies intended for international civilian and security missions. Vucic insists that the sale of drones to Pristina does not fit into these exceptions.
Ankara has not yet officially responded to the Serbian president’s statements. Turkey remains one of Kosovo’s key allies and was one of the first countries to recognize its independence in 2008.
It was recently reported that Kosovo plans to develop its own military drones, launch ammunition production, and create a joint military unit with Albania.
