Trump: U.S. Nuclear Submarines Near Russia

American nuclear submarines have been positioned near Russia’s borders.

U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed the deployment in a statement reported by The Hill.

“I’ve already put out a statement, and the answer is, they are in the region, yeah, where they have to be,” Trump told reporters while traveling back to Washington when asked if the submarines had been deployed yet.

On Friday, he announced the deployment of two nuclear submarines to ‘appropriate regions’ following “highly provocative statements by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

“Based on the highly provocative statements of the Former President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, who is now the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, I have ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that,” Trump said in a Truth Social post.

On Thursday, Trump warned Medvedev after the latter criticized his foreign policy, advising him to “watch his words.”

Ohio-Class Submarines

It is likely that the U.S. Navy has deployed Ohio-class nuclear submarines to the Russian coastline. These vessels form the backbone of the maritime component of America’s strategic nuclear forces.

They belong to the SSBN class (Ship, Submersible, Ballistic, Nuclear) – ballistic missile submarines.

A portion of these submarines is constantly on combat patrol, ensuring the principle of guaranteed nuclear retaliation as part of the deterrence strategy.

The Ohio-class is the only platform in the U.S. Navy that carries Trident intercontinental ballistic missiles armed with nuclear warheads.

However, starting in the 2030s, these submarines will gradually be replaced by a new generation of submarines – the Columbia-class.

In 2019, Huntington Ingalls Industries held a ceremonial steel-cutting event for the first submarine of the Columbia-class.
