US President Donald Trump has said he is ready to fire top military commanders directly at the Quantico base in Virginia.

His speech came after an order from US War Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered hundreds of US Army generals and admirals to gather next week at the Marine Corps base in Virginia, The Washington Post reported.

Trump decided at the last minute to join the meeting.

“I will meet with generals, admirals and leaders. And if I don’t like someone, I will fire them on the spot,” he said.

At the same time, Trump emphasized that he praised the condition and skill of the US military.

“I stand with you. I support you, and as president, I support you 100%,” Donald Trump said.

According to the Washington Post, these words caused confusion and concern as the Trump administration has already fired many senior officials this year.

The newspaper notes that the president’s appearance at Quantico overshadowed Hegseth’s planned address and complicated security at the large-scale and almost unprecedented event, where many generals and admirals had to travel thousands of miles.

Last week, The Washington Post also reported that Hegseth had ordered all commanders to come to Quantico to give a short speech on military standards and his vision of “warrior spirit.”

This month, Trump said that he does not rule out the return of US troops to Afghanistan, as the United States is interested in regaining control of the Bagram air base.
