President Donald Trump has called for the deployment of troops to cities in California where clashes between protesters and law enforcement officials are ongoing.
He announced this on his Truth Social account.
According to Trump, troops should be deployed immediately in Los Angeles, as he believes the situation in the city has become uncontrollable.
Currently, demonstrations have spread to areas near Los Angeles City Hall, Paramount, Compton, and the Metropolitan Detention Center, where clashes with police are taking place. Law enforcement officers are using rubber bullets and tear gas to suppress the riots.
Meanwhile, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on his official X account that he has formally requested the Trump administration to cancel the unauthorized deployment of troops in Los Angeles County and return them under the governor’s command.
According to him, the situation in the city was under control until President Donald Trump acted unilaterally, thereby escalating tensions between protesters and law enforcement.
In addition to the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops in California by Trump’s order, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated late Saturday night in a post on X that, should the unrest continue, the Pentagon will mobilize U.S. Marine Corps units stationed at the Pendleton garrison, which are currently on high alert.
As of Sunday, June 8, approximately 300 National Guard troops have arrived in Los Angeles under the orders of Donald Trump, who accused Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass of failing to stop recent protests targeting immigration agents.
It should be noted that widespread unrest is currently ongoing in the state of California, sparked by Donald Trump’s immigration policies. The protests started after ICE conducted raids in Los Angeles on June 6, during which over 100 people, including children, were detained.
In response, demonstrators took to the streets, where clashes occurred with federal agents who used tear gas and flashbang grenades.
Militarnyi previously reported that U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles following two days of protests triggered by immigration raids.
The deployment of the National Guard was quite unprecedented: Trump bypassed the authority of Governor Gavin Newsom. The last time this happened was in 1965, when President Lyndon B. Johnson sent troops to Alabama to protect civil rights demonstrators.
