Due to these funds, approximately 100 demining groups will be involved in working in the territory of Ukraine.
The U.S. Embassy in Ukraine reported about this.
On August 9, the U.S. Department of State announced its intention to provide $89 million of FY 2022 funding to help the Government of Ukraine address the urgent humanitarian challenges posed by explosive remnants of war created by Russia’s brutal war of aggression.
These explosive hazards block access to fertile farmland, delay reconstruction efforts, and prevent displaced communities from returning to their homes.
“The grotesque use of improvised explosive devices in the manner that we are seeing in Ukraine by Russian actors was previously only associated with ISIS in Syria,” the statement said.
Also, these explosive devices continue to kill and maim innocent Ukrainian civilians.
The Government of Ukraine estimates that 160,000 square kilometers of its land might be contaminated – this is roughly the size of Virginia, Maryland, and Connecticut combined, the embassy noted.
However, the United States stresses that the exact extent of mine contamination is difficult to determine as the war with Russia continues.
U.S. funding will deploy approximately 100 demining teams and will support a large-scale train and equip project to strengthen the Government of Ukraine’s demining and explosive ordnance disposal capacity.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, on August 9, the pyrotechnic units of the State Emergency Service discovered and neutralized 754 explosive objects.
A total of 177,852 explosive objects and 701 kg of explosives, including 2,100 aerial bombs, were defused since the beginning of the large-scale military invasion of the Russian invasion forces on the territory of Ukraine.
The territory with an area of 68 thousand 92 hectares was examined.
