The United States Armed Forces have ordered a bigger number of the 155-mm M109A7 self-propelled howitzers.
This is stated in a press release from the U.S. Department of Defense.
The contract was awarded to the British transnational company BAE Systems.
BAE Systems Land & Armaments was awarded a $ 24,120,717 contract for the production and delivery of a new batch of weapons.
The military also ordered the M992A3 field artillery ammunition support vehicles.
Production will be carried out in York, Pennsylvania, with an estimated completion date of December 31, 2025.
The M109A7 self-propelled howitzer together with the M992A3field artillery ammunition support vehicle provide main fire support for the U.S. Army battle groups.
M109A7 is an upgraded version of the 2012 M109A6 Paladin.
The purpose of the upgrade is to extend the service life span of M109A6 howitzers by 30-40 years and increase their combat performance.
M109A7 self-propelled howitzer is armed with a 155-mm M284 gun, which is equipped with an M182A1 mount.
The M992A3 field artillery ammunition support vehicle is based on the same chassis as the M109A7.
This vehicle, also known as CAT (Carrier Ammunition Tracked), serves as a heavy armored ammunition carrier.
