The potential transfer of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine from the United States or its allies could take several months and involve third parties.
Defense News reported on this with reference to the statement of the U.S. Department of State.
So far, the US does not plan to transfer F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, but it supports the intent of other allies to deliver those aircraft to Kyiv.
The first reports about the possible transfer of fighter jets started to appear in early May 2023.
According to Stan Brown, the transfer of F-16 fighter jets should be “holistic,” with comprehensive training for both pilots and technicians.
“One of the first steps in a potential transfer of F-16 aircraft will be the license to train those airmen, before the license to transfer the aircraft even occurs,” said Stan Brown, the Department’s Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs.
In addition, the mechanism for transferring the aircraft will be decided.
According to him, the US Department of State is already working to complete the paperwork for third-party transfer requests coming from nations like the Netherlands.
Denmark is also interested in transferring its F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine.
Militarnyi previously reported that the Danish government is ready to transfer the F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine. However, for this, there are conditions that require a joint solution by the allies.
In addition to the transfer of aircraft, Denmark and the Netherlands will lead a European coalition to conduct training for Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter jets.
Lloyd Austin, U.S. Secretary of Defense, announced this after the 12th meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group.
