The United States intends to increase sanctions against Iran for its assistance to Russia in a full-scale war against Ukraine.
This was reported by Politico with reference to the U.S. President’s administration official.
This comes following reports that Iran plans to transfer new attack drones and missiles to Russia.
“We are absolutely going to sanction anybody who’s helping Iranians help Russians kill Ukrainians,” the U.S. official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The U.S. official noted that the Biden administration has in the past publicized such Iran’s weapons sales to Russia and made clear they would lead to penalties.
The official refused to name the specific sanctions, but they are likely to include economic restrictions and export control measures aimed at third parties that assist Tehran and Moscow.
On October 16, the Washington Post, citing the U.S. and allied security officials, reported that Iran plans to increase its support for Russia and transfer surface-to-surface missiles.
The weapons transfer from Iran could assist the Russian Federation in compensating for the loss of missiles and equipment after the start of a full-scale offensive against Ukraine.
This regards the Iranian Fateh-110 and Zolfaghar missiles. They are capable of striking targets at distances of 300 and 700 kilometers, respectively.
There is also information that Iran is preparing to supply “dozens” of additional Mohajer-6s and a more significant number of Shahed-136s. At the same time, Iran denies supplying its weapons to the Russian troops.
Additionally, Iranian weapons experts note that the arrival of surface-to-surface missiles could strengthen Russia.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine released a statement calling on Iran to stop supplying weapons to the Russian Federation. The Ukrainian diplomatic service emphasizes that in case of continuing arms supplies to Moscow, Tehran will be considered complicit in Russia’s crimes against Ukraine.
