The US Army has placed an order with Lockheed Martin for the purchase of a large batch of PrSM (Precision Strike Missile) missiles.
This is reported by the official website of the US Department of Defense.
The signed contract worth $4.9 billion is for the purchase of new PrSM Inc 1 missiles, which will replace ATACMS missiles in the army as they are decommissioned.
It should be noted that the purchase of missiles will take place in the period from 2025 to 2029, within which the US Army has contracted the purchase of 1296 PrSM missiles.
In addition to the purchase of conventional Inc 1 missiles, which are capable of engaging only stationary targets, the US Army has also contracted the purchase of 10 PrSM Inc 2 missiles. They will be equipped with a special homing head to engage moving targets.
This is not the first time the US Army has contracted the purchase of missiles of this type. Thus, in the period from 2023 to 2025, a contract was signed for 282 missiles.
The contract for 2023 consisted of 42 missiles worth $162 million; in 2024 – 110 missiles worth $384 million, and in 2025 – 230 missiles worth $492 million.
To date, the PrSM missile has a confirmed range of 499.4 km, although its estimated range is 650 km. This will allow it to hit targets at greater distances than ATACMS was capable of.
In addition, the use of an advanced GCS capable of capturing and attacking moving targets makes the missile a serious anti-ship weapon. This was confirmed during a simulated missile launch exercise.
In June 2024, the United States successfully tested the PrSM missile from an unmanned Autonomous Multi-Domain Launcher (AML), which is capable of receiving information from airborne surveillance aircraft, ships, and other systems to improve accuracy.
Militarnyi previously reported that the US Army deployed M270A2 rocket launchers in Europe, modernized for the use of new GMLRS-ER and PrSM missiles.
A key element of the modernization is the integration of a common fire control system (CFCS). It is designed to unify the M270’s operation with HIMARS and introduce the possibility of using GMLRS-ER long-range precision-guided missiles and Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) short-range ballistic missiles.
