By the end of 2024, the United States will deploy the first battery of the Tomahawk ground-launched cruise missile system, known as Typhon.

The Japanese media, The Asahi Shimbun, reported on this with reference to Gen. Charles Flynn, U.S. Army Pacific commanding general.

The deployment of Typhon medium-range ground-based missile systems in the region could act as a deterrent against China.

For his part, Flynn noted that he would not provide any details on what system would be deployed, where, and when, as this is classified information.

“I’m not going to discuss what system, and I’m not going to say where and when,” noted the general.

If the U.S. Army deploys a surface-launched medium-range missile, it would be the first since Washington and Moscow concluded the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty in 1987.

Despite the fact that Flynn did not disclose details about the system, there is a high probability that it will be the Typhon missile system.

The Typhon medium-range ground-based system is designed to be used by the US Army and United States Marine Corps to launch Tomahawk cruise missiles and SM-6 shipborne missiles.

A senior Defense Ministry official stated that a new U.S. missile launching system based in the Asia-Pacific region would close the gap in missile capabilities with China.

Militarnyi previously reported that in December 2022, the US Army received the first prototype of a battery of medium-range missiles under the Mid-Range Capability (MRC) program, also known by the official name Typhon.

In July 2023, the US Marine Corps for the first time publicly activated the Marine Corps’ first long-range missile battery. The battery will train with long-range launchers, designed to fire Tomahawk cruise missiles.

The creation of the battery is due to the need to improve the capabilities of the United States Marine Corps in long-range strikes and increase the ability to control maritime space.
