NATO member states have committed to providing Ukraine with new air defense systems.
U.S. President Joe Biden stated this in his speech at the opening of the NATO Summit in Washington.
U.S. President Joe Biden, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyи signed the statement.
According to the text, the partners will transfer to Ukraine:
“These five strategic air defense systems will help to protect Ukrainian cities, civilians, and soldiers, and we are coordinating closely with the Ukrainian government so that these systems can be utilized rapidly. We are working on a further announcement of additional strategic air defense systems for Ukraine this year,” the signatories stated.
The statement also said that in the coming months, the United States and the partners intend to provide Ukraine with “dozens of tactical air defense systems.” These include NASAMS, HAWK, IRIS T-SLM, IRIS T-SLS, and Gepard systems.
“Several Allies, including Canada, Norway, Spain, and the United Kingdom, will continue to play an integral role in the provision of these systems, and many other supporters of Ukraine will assist in the provision of interceptors,” the statement reads.
President Biden also pointed out the previously announced commitments to assist in the supply of anti-missile systems.
“The U.S. will ensure that when Ukraine receives interceptor missiles, it will receive them out of turn,” he said.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the statement, calling it a “specific result” of the work at the NATO summit in Washington. He thanked the partners for adopting the Declaration in support of Ukraine’s air defense system.
“The additional Patriot, SAMP/T, and IRIS-T SLM air defense systems, as well as other tactical missile systems to be delivered to Ukraine from partners, will help us destroy Russian drones and missiles and better protect Ukrainians from Russian air terror, such as yesterday’s brutal attack on our main children’s hospital,” Zelensky said.
Recently, the U.S. military signed a contract to produce 870 missiles for the Patriot air defense system.
