The United Kingdom and Germany signed a defense pact in case Donald Trump wins the US presidential election.
The document was signed by the new UK Secretary of State for Defence, John Healey, who met with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.
First of all, the two countries fear losing the same level of support from the United States that is currently being provided under Joe Biden’s presidency.
The main areas that may suffer in the event of a Trump presidency are the export of missile systems, the receipt of intelligence information from the United States, and critical systems to ensure the protection of European countries from cyberattacks.
The pact could also provide further support for Ukraine in the war against Russia, as Britain and Germany play one of the most important roles in this.
“Our new defense declaration between the United Kingdom and Germany will kickstart a deep, new defense relationship built on the shared values of our nations,” Healey said.
The cooperation will also ensure investment in arms production and development in important areas, such as long-range missiles, including ballistic and cruise missiles, long-range air defense systems, and modern reconnaissance satellite systems.
“The deal commits both sides to ramp up industrial coordination and joint operations while trailing much more to come,” Politico noted.
Cooperation between German and British defense companies is currently at one of the highest levels, as the countries promote joint projects such as the Boxer APC, drones, and battlefield management systems.
“Objectives set out in Wednesday’s joint declaration … include strengthening U.K. and German defense industries, reinforcing Euro-Atlantic security, improving the efficiency of joint operations, confronting evolving security challenges such as the cyber domain, and supporting Ukraine,” the U.K. defense ministry noted.
The transition to European alternatives to important systems will allow countries to provide their armed forces with independence in their use, as the United States has repeatedly denied permission to use them and restricted their activities.
Militarnyi previously reported that the British Head of the Army stated that the UK currently faces threats from four countries, including Russia.
