The Republic of Korea has received a new request from the United States for the supply of shells

South Korea received a new request from the United States for the supply of 155 mm artillery shells.

Korea JoongAng Daily reported this based on data obtained from anonymous government sources.

Currently, the country’s government is discussing this matter.

The South Korean media noted that the US had already purchased 100,000 rounds of 155 mm artillery ammunition to be transferred to Ukraine in November of last year.

This was also reported by the American media with reference to their own sources.

However, the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Korea claimed at the time that the purchase of ammunition was carried out “under the condition that the US is the end user,” and the sale was intended to replenish the ammunition stocks of the United States military.

The purchase took place under a confidential arms supply agreement between Seoul and Washington.

The Wall Street Journal article explained that routing the deal through the U.S. allows South Korea to stick to the letter of its public commitment to not transfer lethal military support to Ukraine while assisting Washington, Seoul’s paramount ally in deterring North Korea.

Currently, the position of the government of the Republic of Korea on the non-supply of lethal weapons to Ukraine remains unchanged.

As previously reported, during his visit to South Korea, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called on Seoul to provide military assistance to Ukraine.

He suggested the country’s authorities reconsider their policy of not providing weapons to countries in military conflicts.

The legislation of the Republic of Korea prohibits the supply of weapons to countries involved in military conflicts.
