The U.S. Department of Defense has reported on Russian losses in a full-scale war against Ukraine.
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the total number of wounded and killed Russian invaders has reached 80 thousand soldiers.
Colin Kahl, Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, shared this with the reporters at a press briefing, WSJ writes.
The casualty estimation done by the U.S. “is fairly exceptional contemplating that the Russians have achieved none of Vladimir Putin’s aims at the start of the conflict,” Mr. Kahl said.
Russia’s “overall objective was to overrun the entire country, to engage in regime change in Kyiv, to snuff out Ukraine as an independent sovereign and democratic nation. None of that has happened.”
The American publication emphasizes that, overall, the Russian military is made up of roughly 900,000 troops.
It is also unclear whether the US estimates take into account the losses of pro-Russian forces operating in the so-called “people’s republics” established by the Russian Federation in the temporarily occupied territories of Luhansk and Donetsk Regions.
Last month, CIA Director William Burns stated that the U.S. estimated approximately 15,000 Russian troops to have been killed during the conflict and about 45,000 wounded.
In March, Russia’s official assessment of the Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine was 1,351. It hasn’t released any official number since.
A few days prior to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Western officers were estimating that Russian Federation had staged roughly 150,000 troops close to Ukraine’s border.
Recently, several dozen Russian regions started to establish the so-called “volunteer battalions” to supplement units that have lost their combat capability.
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as of the morning of August 9, 2022, Russian losses amounted to 42,640 eliminated invaders.
