The Ukrainian ice-class research vessel Noosphera passed through the Bosphorus and entered the Mediterranean Sea.

On January 28, Noosphera embarked on its first Ukrainian-flagged navigation from Odessa in the direction of the Ukrainian Antarctic Akademik Vernadsky station.
On board the icebreaker, in addition to the crew, six Ukrainian Antarctic researchers, and another 28 scientists will join them in the Chilean port of Punta Arenas.
The ship will be delivered to Antarctica, to the Vernadsky Research Base, team of the 27th Ukrainian expedition to replace our winterers. In addition, to take on board the second group of scientists – researchers of the Southern Ocean.
The Noosphera research icebreaker that has undergone maintenance at the Black Sea Shipyard will deliver a variety of cargoes to the station: annual supply of provisions, technological equipment and construction materials.
The crew of Noosphera consisting of 26 sailors was headed by Ukrainian captain Pavlo Panasyuk, who has extensive experience on foreign research vessels.
The icebreaker “Noosphere” is the former flagship of Britain’s Royal Scientific Navy – RRS James Clark Ross. On October 29, 2021, a ceremonial renaming of the vessel took place. In Ukraine, the icebreaker was named “Noosphere”.
On 19 August 2021, the National Antarctic Scientific Center and the UK Research and Innovation signed an act to purchase the scientific vessel. On August 30, 2021, hoisted the blue-and-yellow flag on the vessel.
On 18 September 2021, the icebreaker departed Frederikshaven (Denmark) for Ukraine. Before entering the sea, significant work was carried out on the re-registration and insurance of the vessel, new call letter ones were received, etc. The marine research vessel James Clark Ross, on 3 October passed through the Bosphorus Strait to the Black Sea and headed for Odessa.
On board Noosphera there are several laboratories for studying samples of seawater, and soils from the bottom, research of representatives of ocean flora and fauna and for conducting chemical experiments, fixing climate change.
