At least 100 Leopard 1A5 tanks are ready to be transferred to Ukraine by the Netherlands in cooperation with Denmark and Germany.
The countries will also supply spare parts and ammunition. The Netherlands is also ready to participate in the training of Ukrainian crews.
Minister of Defense Kajsa Ollongren and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wopke Hoekstra reported this to the House of Representatives of the Netherlands.
The equipment is planned to be purchased directly from the German industry.
“The war in Ukraine is at a decisive stage. I expect the fighting to intensify in the coming months. Russia continues to mobilize, and there are signs that Russia is preparing a new offensive. This is why the supply of main battle tanks is important to preserve Ukraine’s stability and improve its position on the battlefield,” Kajsa Ollongren, Minister of Defense of the Netherlands, reported.
It is noted that the Defense Ministries of the Netherlands and Germany have been working with the German industry for some time on the availability of Leopard 1 tanks that could be transferred to Ukraine.
“The number of tanks to be delivered in addition to the 100 still depends on the process of reviewing the existing tanks in the stockpiles of the German industry,” reads a statement on the website of the Dutch government.
It is emphasized that the initiative to transfer Leopard 1A5 to Ukraine is separate from the idea of transferring Leopard 2A6 tanks to Ukrainian forces.
“The defense ministers of the countries that support Ukraine militarily will meet again in Brussels on February 14, prior to the meeting of NATO defense ministers. The supply of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine will be discussed there,” the report said.
As previously reported, Leopard 1 tanks for Ukraine could be purchased from a private Belgian company.
