The European Union will provide Moldova with EUR 60 million to support its defense capabilities in 2025.
European Council President Antonio Costa announced this at a press conference with Moldovan President Maia Sandu, Reuters reports.
The funds are provided to increase the security capabilities of the country bordering Ukraine, which is fighting against the Russian invaders.
Moldova, which wants to join the EU, has already received EUR 37 million from the European Peace Facility, making it the second largest beneficiary after Ukraine.
At the end of January, Militarnyi reported that Sweden would provide the Moldovan Armed Forces with military aid in the form of AT4 anti-tank grenade launchers worth $1.17 million.
At the time, Swedish Defense Minister Paul Johnson stated that increasing Sweden’s engagement with Eastern European countries such as Moldova was a key part of Sweden’s policy of deterring Russia.
“Moldova is the target of constant Russian influence campaigns, and it is in the interest of European security to help Moldova become stronger and safer,” the Minister wrote on the X social media.
In December, it was reported that the European Union would provide Moldova with equipment to intercept drones.
It is yet unknown what kind of equipment this is. It could be electronic warfare (EW) equipment or other systems.
In August 2024, Germany reinforced the Moldovan border police with Ukrainian-made FurSeal 485 boats. And Lithuania handed over a batch of thermal imaging sights to the Moldovan army as part of security assistance.
In November 2023, the Moldovan Army received the last batch of Piranha IIIH armored personnel carriers from Germany.
The APCs were supplied to modernize the country’s armed forces’ armored vehicle fleet. This was based on an agreement signed between the Ministries of Defense of the two countries in October 2022.
