In the east of Latvia, the construction of the first defensive line has started.

This was reported by Latvijas Sabiedriskie Mediji.

The first anti-tank ditch was dug near the Terekhov border checkpoint a few hundred meters from the border.

Depending on the terrain and situation in each specific location, anti-tank ditches will have different sizes. They will measure about two meters high and three meters wide.

These anti-tank ditches are only a small part of the plan to fortify the eastern border and the planned defensive line in the Baltic.

It is reported that Latvia would now concentrate on erected engineering structures without installing minefields, which were planned to be deployed only in the event of an immediate threat of war.

After the construction of the moats, the Latvian military plans to install dragon’s teeth, anti-tank hedgehogs and concrete blocks and barriers filled with sand.

Construction takes place including private land plots with the consent of their owners. It is planned to attract not only military engineers, but also civilian contractors for construction.

On March 10, Militarnyi reported that the Latvian cabinet had approved a plan to build fortifications on the eastern border of the state.

The plan to strengthen the eastern border and to counter the mobility of enemy troops is part of the Baltic Defensive Line initiative, which covers the entire length of the border with Russia and Belarus.

Baltic Defensive Line

Militarnyi reported in January that the Estonian government had decided to build a defense line of about 600 concrete bunkers to repel alleged Russian aggression.

The construction of the defense line will take place on the eastern borders of the state, namely in the Ida-Virumaa region and in southeastern Estonia. Some fortifications will be built near Lake Peipus.

At a meeting in Riga, the Baltic states defense ministers agreed that Latvia and Lithuania would also create a similar defense zone on the eastern border. For NATO, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania there is a single operational zone.

According to the adviser to the vice-chancellor of the Ministry of Defense Kaido Tiitus, fortification facilities at the border are needed in order to protect the territory of Estonia from the first meter if necessary.

In addition, it was reported that the Baltic states were considering withdrawing from the treaty on the prohibition of the use of anti-personnel mines.
