On the night of February 28, explosion sounds at the Russian military airfield in the city of Yeysk in the Krasnodar Krai were reported.
After that, a fire occurred, which was captured on video by local residents.
At the time, the district administration claimed that it was “a military tactical exercise.”
However, on March 1, the Schemes RFE/RL program released Planet Labs satellite images, which show the aftermath of a fire on the territory of the air defense training ground located west of the airfield in the city of Yeysk, Krasnodar Krai of the Russian Federation.
The satellite image from February 22 shows no signs of a fire at the training ground.
However, the image from March 1 already features visible traces of the fire.
The report notes that it is not yet known whether the military airfield in Yeysk itself was damaged.
The satellite has not yet recorded what the Russian airport looks like now.
Schemes also published pictures from February 15 showing which Russian planes were previously stationed at the airfield.
Two MiG-29 fighter aircraft, two Tu-134s, six Su-34 (Su-30) fighter-bomber jets, two An-72 transport aircraft, and one IL-38 were stationed in the eastern part of the airfield.
According to the photo, three Il-38, one An-72, and three Su-27 (Su-30/35) were stationed in the central part of the airfield.
Il-62 passenger aircraft and three An-24 or An-26 transport aircraft were located in the western part of the airfield.
