A unit of the West Virginia Air National Guard is transporting aircraft to Ukraine.
The US Defense Visual Information Distribution Service announced this.
The 167th Airlift Wing has C-17 Globemaster III military transport aircraft in its service.
The C-17 cargo compartment can accommodate an M1A1 or M1A2 tank, an M2 or M3 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle, trucks weighing up to 45 tons (two in a row), jeeps (three in a row), an M109 155-mm self-propelled howitzer, up to three AH-64 attack helicopters, or up to eighteen 463L containers with cargo.
The unit’s aircraft are based at the Shepherd Field in West Virginia, however, the helicopters for Ukraine are being picked up from Davis-Monthan, Arizona.
The Globemaster III C-17 military transport aircraft will then travel to Sliač Airport in Slovakia.
From that point on, the “Afghan” Mi-17V-5 helicopters would be heading to Ukraine.
“The Mi-17 is one of 16 helicopters and many other weapons systems that the United States is handing over to the Ukrainian servicemen,” the U.S. military said in a statement.
Previously, the Armed Forces of Ukraine started operating the Russian-made Mi-17 helicopters, which were transferred from the United States.
On April 13, the United States reported an $800 million aid package for Ukraine, which included 11 helicopters.
The United States is providing Ukraine with aircraft equipment previously belonging to or assigned to the Afghanistan Air Force, which no longer exists.
Approximately two dozen former Afghanistan Air Force Mi-8/17 helicopters were located outside the country, and their fate remained unknown. In January, the former Air Force of Afghanistan aircraft located in the United States was brought to the Arizona military base.
