Ukrainian air defense takes out the Russian Su-24 bomber jet.
The Russian warplane was hit by a man-portable air-defense system.
The strike hit the tail section of the aircraft, but the Russian pilot managed to land the plane.
Russian media claimed that this was Su-24 with the tail number RF-93799 that was hit in the Bakhmut area in the Donbas.
It is stated that the aircraft belonged to the so-called Wagner PMC formation. However, Su-24 has the markings of the Russian Aerospace Forces.
The Su-24 bomber jet was heavily damaged by the MANPADS and was put out of action. It will not be able to participate in combat operations until it is restored.
On February 14, the Command of the National Guard of Ukraine reported that in the Bakhmut area, national guardsmen hit a Russian warplane with Piorun MANPADS.
The report was presumably about this Su-24 bomber jet with the number RF-93799.
The crew of the 3rd Operational Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine hit the Russian warplane with the MANPADS.
“On February 13, at 18:03 pm, in the Bakhmut area, the National Guard “worked out” an enemy`s Su-24 warplane that was attacking Ukrainian positions and settlements. As a result of the Piorun MANPADS crew’s combat work, the enemy aircraft was neutralized. The guys hit the target with the first shot,” the reports said.
The Piorun portable anti-aircraft missile system is produced in Poland. This is a deeply modernized version of the Polish Grom systems produced by Mesko.
It is designed to combat low-flying targets. With the upgrade, the sensitivity of the infrared homing head was quadrupled.
