Thailand has suspended an expanded “peace agreement” with neighboring Cambodia over a disputed border. The decision was made just two weeks after the document was signed in the presence of US President Donald Trump.

A Thai government spokesman stated that the decision was related to an incident in which Thai soldiers were injured by a mine explosion near the Cambodian border in Sisaket province, the BBC reports.

According to local media, the soldiers were injured while patrolling the border area. One of the soldiers lost a leg.

Cambodia, in turn, said it remained committed to the agreement, which aims to ensure lasting peace after numerous border clashes that killed more than 40 people.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Shinawirakul emphasized that he shared the Ministry of Defense’s position that “the threat to the country’s security has not diminished.”

The border conflict between the two countries has been ongoing for more than a hundred years, since the borders were determined after the French occupation of Cambodia.

On October 26, US President Donald Trump attended the signing ceremony for a peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand. Trump noted the “mutual respect” of Prime Ministers Hun Maneth and Anutin Shinawatra, emphasizing the contrast with the protracted wars in the Middle East and Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

On July 24, 2025, armed clashes between Thai and Cambodian forces resumed on the disputed border after more than a decade of lull.

The Thai military took to the skies with F-16 fighter jets, which struck Cambodian targets along the border. This led to a sharp escalation of tensions in the region.

The attack took place the day after a Thai soldier was killed by a landmine. At least 36 people were killed in the fighting, and more than 150,000 civilians fled their homes on both sides of the 800-kilometer border.

The situation quickly spiraled out of control, with reports of heavy artillery shelling and air strikes. Both sides accused each other of attacking civilian objects.

On July 25, Thailand imposed martial law in eight border areas.

On July 28, the parties agreed to cease hostilities, and the agreement came into force the next day.
