Zakłady Mechaniczne Bumar-Łabędy S.A. has begun servicing T-64 tanks implementing an agreement concluded recently by Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa and the Ukrainian Ukroboronprom State Concern.
The Polish defense company made a corresponding announcement on its official website.
Bumar-Łabędy and Ukroboronprom have jointly established a technical center for the repair of T-64 tanks. The agreement stipulates that Ukrainian T-64 tanks will be serviced and brought to full working order.
The new facilities will be based on the company’s technological potential in the city of Gliwice.
The choice of Bumar-Łabędy as the partner of this contract results from its extensive experience in servicing and modernizing tanks of the T family, including the T-72M and its Polish development, the PT-91.
“We are ready to create a hub for repairs of armoured equipment used by the Ukrainian army. We have over 70 years of experience in the field of production and repairs. Retrofitting and modernization of armoured equipment will provide a key help in maintaining the defensive capabilities of the Ukrainian army. Thanks to regular repair and service activities, the used vehicles will regain the required combat readiness,” said Edyta Szymańska, President of the Management Board of ZM “BUMAR-ŁABĘDY” S.A.
The agreement provides for cooperation in the field of repairs, overhauls, assembly, production and development of the supply chain of T-64 tanks along with other elements of the technological process. In the long term, the plan is to extend cooperation to the service of T-72 and PT-91 tanks, transferred by Poland to the Ukrainian side.
Back in March of this year, Polish Minister of Defense Mariusz Błaszczak said that the Polish government had started the process of organizing a service center on the territory of Poland, which would be responsible for the maintenance and repair of Western tanks that had arrived or would arrive in the near future in Ukraine.
Currently, the Bumar-Łabędy company is considered as a maintenance center for the Leopard 2 family of tanks transferred to Ukraine by the international armored coalition. Due to the program of modernization of Leopard 2A4 tanks to the 2PL standard for the needs of the Polish Army, the company received the knowledge, technical base and experience necessary to perform the tasks.
