Switzerland could provide 200 troops to participate in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine with the approval of the country’s government.

Reuters reported on this, citing an interview with Thomas Suessli, Swiss armed forces chief.

Talk of sending peacekeepers is purely hypothetical for now, as the decision on whether to involve the military in such a mission will remain with the parliament and the government.

“We could probably field around 200 soldiers in nine to 12 months,” Suessli told the newspaper SonntagsBlick.

He noted that peacekeeping forces will not be involved in Ukraine under any circumstances as long as the war continues.

In addition, he emphasized that in the event of the formation of a peacekeeping force, the Swiss government should receive a proposal from the UN to participate in the peacekeeping operation.
