The Ministry of Defense of Sweden has placed an order for the purchase of 227-kilogram Mk.82 aircraft bombs from Rheinmetall.
This was reported on the official website of the Ministry of Defense of Sweden.
The value of this order is estimated at USD 9,170,000, which will replenish the stocks of bombs in the Swedish Air Force.
“The acquisition of bomb casings is another step in strengthening the operational capabilities of Swedish fighters as part of NATO,” Martin Anderberg, Head of Combat Aircraft Systems at FMV, stated.
According to the plan, the delivery of bombs should begin in the spring of 2025.
Today, Sweden does not involve its aircraft in air operations to strike the members of the ISIS terrorist organization and other NATO operations.
Therefore, the bulk of the bombs are consumed during training drops and are also used to install Paveway precision-guided missiles.
The 500-pound (227 kg) Mk.82 aerial bomb is currently one of the most massive modular bombs in the world and the most commonly used bombs by NATO members.
The bomb is used to mount precision-guided munitions such as JDAM or Paveway, as well as French AASM (HUMMER), British Paveway 4, Korean KGB and Japanese GCS-1.
Earlier, Militarnyi reported that the US State Department had approved a major sale of aircraft and helicopter weapons to Israel.
In particular, the agreement includes the supply of 2,166 GBU-39/B SDB-I precision-guided bombs and 2,800 Mk.82 free-fall bombs weighing 227 kg.
The estimated value is $6.75 billion, and delivery is expected to begin in 2025.
