Swedish Defence Minister Paul Johnson shared that Stockholm was considering handing over its tanks to Ukraine.
This will be possible after Germany’s decision to transfer Leopard tanks to Ukraine.
Svenska Dagbladet reported this.
“Currently, there are no preparations for the transfer of tanks from Sweden, but it is possible that this may happen later,” the media’s comment states.
It is emphasized that the country has 120 Stridsvagn 122 tanks. It is the Swedish version of the German Leopard 2A5 tank.
The tank was developed by Krauss-Maffei and Swedish Åkers Krutbruk Protection AB.
Stridsvagn 122, as well as Leopard 2A5, is based on Leopard 2. Its armor is equipped with additional protection made of armored steel from SSAB. In addition, the CBRN defense system is installed to protect against chemical, biological, and radioactive weapons.
The guidance system allows the target to be detected and identified by a laser range meter, and thermographic camera, along with a speed, distance, and accuracy calculator.
The hydraulic guidance system of the turret was replaced with an electric drive, which also improved accuracy.
The gun for the tank is produced under license by Bofors. It is based on the Rheinmetall Rh-120 L/44 120mm smoothbore gun. The tank is also equipped with French GALIX smoke dispensers.
On January 25, Germany will consider transferring Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. According to German journalists, the discussion will cover the transfer of the Leopard 2A6 tank company.
