The Prime Minister of Sweden has confirmed that Sweden would consider contributing to post-war peacekeeping forces in Ukraine.

Answering questions from journalists, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said his country’s possible participation in a peacekeeping operation in Ukraine, adding that progress in negotiations must have been made before any such decision was made.

“We will take part in those discussions and of course that is absolutely a possibility,” he said. “There needs to be a very clear mandate for those forces and I don’t think we can see that until we have come further in those negotiations. But Sweden, we are normally a part of strengthening security in our part of the world, so I foresee us to be a part of that this time as well.”

Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard said on Monday that a just and sustainable peace which respected international law would need to be organised first.

“Once we have such a peace established we need to ensure it can be maintained and then our government doesn’t exclude anything,” she said.

The Swedish politicians’ statements came after the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Sir Keir Starmer, announced the British government’s readiness to deploy peacekeepers to Ukraine to ensure the implementation of any peace agreement.

He said that the decision was very difficult for him, as putting British troops in harm’s way could not be taken lightly.

The Prime Minister also suggested that the UK could play a “unique role” as a bridge between Europe and the US in the peace process for Ukraine. During the interview, Sir Keir Starmer emphasized that the UK would continue to support Ukraine and seek a fair peace for the country, along with comprehensive support.

“The UK is ready to play a leading role in accelerating work on security guarantees for Ukraine. This includes continued support for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The UK has already committed £3 billion a year until at least 2030,” the Prime Minister said.
