Sweden has allocated €2.4 million to Ukraine to investigate war crimes committed by the Russian invaders.
The European Union Advisory Mission Ukraine (EUAM Ukraine) reported this on Thursday, October 3.
The funds will be used to improve the digital infrastructure of justice and judicial proceedings in Ukraine, which will allow for more efficient prosecution of war crimes.
This major funding will power the implementation of the SMEREKA e-case management system.
It is transforming how Ukrainian law enforcement and prosecutors handle complex international criminal cases.
With EUAM’s support, the project will upgrade digital infrastructure for the Office of the Prosecutor General, the Security Service of Ukraine, and the National Police.
By modernizing data storage and improving case management, the initiative will ensure that perpetrators are held accountable.
“This effort underscores EUAM’s commitment to strengthening Ukraine’s justice system and the international partners’ dedication to supporting Ukraine in its fight for accountability and the rule of law,” the statement said.
The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry into violations in Ukraine has found new evidence of the widespread practice of mass torture of Ukrainian civilians and prisoners of war by Russians.
The use of torture by the Russian authorities against Ukrainians occurs both in the temporarily occupied territories and in Russia itself, according to a new report by the Commission, which was published on September 23 on the UN official website.
The Commission also considers the testimonies of former prisoners about prison staff in Russia, which point to orders for ill-treatment.
Previously, Russian soldiers committed another war crime by shooting 16 Ukrainian prisoners of war in the Pokrovsk sector.
