Ukraine will soon be able to destroy attack drones with the help of the Tryzub domestic laser system.
Vadym Sukharevskyi, Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces, announced this during an interview with the PRESSING YouTube channel.
According to him, specialists developed the domestic laser system in a few months, and it is currently undergoing appropriate tests to confirm its characteristics.
“I am supporting this project so that with the help of technological solutions, we can effectively shoot down enemy reconnaissance drones and ensure the defense of strategic facilities and places of residence of our population,” Sukharevskyi said.
Such systems enable the Armed Forces to obtain weapons that can destroy both mortar shells and drones at a low cost per shot. According to Sukharevsky, the Tryzub system is also capable of destroying aircraft, which was demonstrated during tests.
It is worth noting that any detailed characteristics of this system, including laser power, are currently unknown.
According to the Commander, there is a possibility that in the future, mobile air defense groups will be able to receive full-fledged laser systems instead of machine guns, which will significantly increase their effectiveness in the fight against drones.
In an interview with Interfax, Vadym Sukharevskyi noted that Ukraine has become the fifth country in the world to have a working model of the laser system. He also added that the Tryzub laser system is currently capable of shooting down aircraft at an altitude of over 2 km.
In April 2024, UK Defense Secretary Grant Shapps announced that his country plans to transfer the first samples of the DragonFire laser directed-energy weapon to Ukraine.
According to him, the UK plans to receive the first DragonFire systems by 2027 but is working to send prototypes to Ukraine earlier, even if they are not 100 percent ready.
DragonFire is a British 50+ kW power laser weapon. Its development was launched in 2018, led by leading UK companies such as MBDA UK, Leonardo UK, and QinetiQ Group.
The system was designed to destroy drones, but now, the British military command sees it as a powerful enough tool to intercept artillery ammunition, cruise missiles, and even ballistic missiles.
