American General Dynamics will strengthen the armor of Stryker armored personnel carriers.

This is reported by DVIDS.

As part of the Stryker Enhanced Armor program, the company will upgrade existing vehicles in the US Army and integrate new modules of additional protection.

The new additional armor will improve the ballistic protection of armored personnel carriers and increase their resistance to various threats.

“As government research and development moves to our industrial partners, critical survival and protection capabilities will get into the hands of our warfighters faster and more cost-effectively,” said Josh Peterson, GVSC deputy director.

In FY 2024, the program took a significant step forward when it transitioned to the Stryker Battlegroup Combat Team (SBCT) project manager, who in turn awarded a task order to GDLS to begin the process of integrating SEA into future Stryker platforms.

This makes it the first enhanced armor system to move from the research and development stage to the equipment manufacturer.

Despite the improved protection, Stryker armored personnel carriers have already demonstrated high survivability in Ukraine with the existing armor package.

The armored personnel carrier was developed on the basis of the Canadian LAV-3 infantry fighting vehicle. In the original version, it provided protection against 14.5 mm bullets in the frontal projection and 7.62 mm ammunition on the sides.

After modernization based on the experience of operation in Iraq, DEW Engineering began producing special modular ceramic plates for armored personnel carriers.

Their installation ensures protection of the sides from 14.5 mm bullets and the frontal projection from 20-25 mm guns.

Earlier, Militarnyi reported that a fighter of the Ukrainian Air Assault Forces had told how the armor of a Stryker armored personnel carrier had saved an infantry unit from enemy fire.

Despite being hit, the vehicle’s armor helped save both the entire crew and the soldiers in the troop compartment.

In addition, no one was killed, but several were lightly wounded.
