A Greek airbase has been hit by flooding caused by Storm Byron, which has flooded aircraft hangars.
The 112th Combat Wing’s air base in Elefsina is under water, Koutipandoras reports.
In particular, a hangar used to service aircraft used by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs was flooded.
It is also noted that the base staff did everything possible to protect the equipment.
The situation at the base of the 112th is not ‘unexpected,’ but the result of a “long-known but deliberately ignored’’ chain of neglect.
“The long-term postponement of repair and infrastructure projects made the current situation virtually inevitable,” the publication says.
This is not the first such incident in the Greek Armed Forces. In 2023, during the Daniel storm, the Stefanovikio airbase near Volos was also under water.
Footage circulated online showed UH-1H Iroquois helicopters of the 1st Aviation Brigade standing in huge puddles.
Stefanovikio was one of the largest air bases with more than 100 helicopters, including Apache, Kiowa and Huey.
At the time, the Greek Ground Forces Command stated that most of the vehicles had been relocated to other bases in advance and were safe.
However, in some hangars, the water level rose up to five meters, and some of the vehicles under repair were not damaged only because some components were removed.
However, Greek sources confirmed that “an investigation is ongoing due to the inadequate preventive measures taken.”
