The military counterintelligence and investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine detained a Russian ‘mole’ who was passing plans for the special operations of the Ukrainian Defense Forces behind enemy lines to the invaders.

It is noted that the agent of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (better known as the GRU) had turned out to be a lieutenant colonel, commander of one of the units of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who had been recruited by the Russians before the start of the full-scale war.

The Command of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine also confirmed the detention of the serviceman.

According to the investigation, in the spring of 2024, he was remotely “activated” by a Russian GRU officer and assigned a task: to pass on to the Russians plans for the combat operations of the Ukrainian Defense Forces behind enemy lines.

The defendant was recruited through his acquaintances in Russia, with whom he kept in touch.

The invaders were most interested in intelligence on the sabotage and reconnaissance raids by Ukrainian Special Forces behind the front line in the Zaporizhzhia, Kherson and Crimean directions.

“To fulfill the enemy’s task, the mole used his official position, thanks to which he received information about the planned routes of movement of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, their weapons and “goals,” the SSU said.

The Russian invaders planned to use this information to eliminate the Ukrainian Special Forces on the front line or beyond it – in the temporarily occupied part of the territory in southern Ukraine. In addition, the agent “leaked” to his Russian supervisor information about other units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces.

As a result of the special operation, the SSU military counterintelligence gradually documented the crimes of the lieutenant colonel and detained him. At the same time, comprehensive measures were taken to secure the locations of the Defense Forces.

During the searches, the SSU seized the detainee’s means of secret communication, computer equipment, a mobile phone and data storage devices.

The SSU investigators served him a notice of suspicion of high treason. He is currently in custody. He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
