The SSU apprehended Russian agents who blew up a car in Kyiv on February 11 this year.
The Security Service of Ukraine reported this on its social media.
The perpetrators are a 47-year-old Ukrainian Armed Forces serviceman recruited by the enemy, who left his place of service in the Sumy region without permission, and his 29-year-old accomplice from Kyiv.
Russian special services purchased a used van through front men and ordered it to be converted into a supposed ambulance for transporting wounded Defense Forces soldiers.
“To do this, the car sellers installed oxygen and gas cylinders in the vehicle’s interior and equipped it with a webcam with remote access, which was then used by Russian special services,” the SSU reported.
The ‘order’ was carried out by a 47-year-old Ukrainian Armed Forces serviceman recruited by the enemy, who had left his place of service in the Sumy region without permission. After fleeing the garrison, the deserter ‘went underground’ in western Ukraine.
He enlisted the help of a 29-year-old accomplice from Kyiv, whom he introduced as a Ukrainian special services agent, and instructed him to make a homemade explosive device (HED) with remote activation.
The perpetrators first loaded the van with explosives and then blew it up while it was parked next to one of the SSU facilities.
“Gas cylinder equipment was supposed to be used to increase the destructive power of the explosion, and the Russians used video equipment to monitor the parking of the van at the site of the planned terrorist attack,” the SSU said in a statement.
After making the explosive device, the suspects placed it inside the van and quickly left the location. Russian special services then remotely detonated the vehicle.
As a result of comprehensive measures taken jointly with the National Police, investigators from the SSU Main Directorate in Kyiv and the Kyiv region, and under the procedural guidance of the prosecutor’s office, the organizers of the terrorist attack were detained within 24 hours.
“During searches of the temporary residences of the perpetrators, components for a homemade bomb, video surveillance cameras, and SIM cards were found, which were being prepared for new terrorist attacks,” the SSU reported.
Currently, Security Service investigators have notified both agents of their suspicion under Part 2 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (terrorist act). The detainees are in custody. They face up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.
